Book Review: Trending in Love by Pankaj Dubey
Sanam and Aamir are as contrasting as it can get; Sanam is from a rich, privileged family but instead of being a brat she is bright and ambitious. Aamir, on the other hand, is from a small village in Kashmir and unlike his cousins who detest the government. Aamir is a simple guy who is only inclined towards the betterment of his family conditions.
Sanam decides to join the administration side after being snubbed by a politician at a pub. Aamir finds his motivation to attempt the IAS entrance exam from an army Major who employees Aamir at his hotel. Sanam and Aamir grab the top two places in the entrance and proceed for training at the same Officers Training Academy.
Though Sanam takes her time to admire Aamir, he seems to be warm towards her from the beginning. As love blossoms between these two, what will stand in between their happiness and a happy ending for their love, forms the rest of the story.
Trending in Love is a sweet, heartwarming, feel-good love story with two protagonists who are completely diverse in their backgrounds and personalities, however, nonetheless fall in deep love.
Prior to the meeting for their training, the story also explores the ground reality in Kashmir. It further explores how some steps by the government may be causing inconvenience to ordinary people. The story also explores through Sanam’s preparation for the entrance exam, the sexist mindset of how women are still not seen as fit for certain jobs in the society.
Moreover, the author of “Trending in Love” succeeds in showcasing the contrast between Sanam and Aamir while building their character graphs. Even their family and friends’ characters have been well developed. Furthermore, the story built up in the training academy is even more adorable while giving college and hostel feels as the love story gives mushy feel.
However, later poses some important questions about the times we live in, the influence of social media. By subtly touching on social and political issues in the backdrop of a love story, the author makes this story more relevant to today’s readers and a must-read for all.
