mother teresa

Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. After living in Macedonia for eighteen years she moved to Ireland to be a nun to serve through helping the poor, and then to India, where she lived for most of her life.

She began by working as a teacher; however, the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her, and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”.

For her serving others was a fundamental principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ. For many years, she along with a small group of nuns survived on minimal income and food, often having to beg for funds. But, slowly her efforts with the poorest were noted and appreciated by the local community. Here are a few books on Mother Teresa if you would like to know more about her:

By 1997 the 13-member Calcutta congregation had grown to more than 4,000 sisters who managed orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centers worldwide, caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress.

When she was asked how to promote world peace, she replied,”Go home and love your family.” Please click here to know more about her. Also, here are the 10 Quotes by her on Kindness, Love & Humanity:
